Computer deals, scored against the damn calendar

Nowhere does the age of a price matter more. Computer hardware pricing is driven by component generation cycles, so a discount's meaning depends heavily on where the product sits in its generation. A laptop at 35% off six weeks after its successor's chip is announced is clearance. The same laptop at 35% off two months after launch is a genuinely unusual event. Same number, completely different damn story, and a plain discount percentage can't tell them apart.

How we score computers

We lean on the recent trading range rather than lifetime lows, for the same reason as electronics — hardware prices decline structurally across a generation, which makes historic lows a misleading benchmark. Storage and memory get treated with extra suspicion, since SSD and RAM prices move with commodity market cycles rather than with individual product promotions, so a falling price there often reflects the whole damn market, not a deal on that specific drive. Rank is weighted heavily throughout, because the long tail of this category is thick with clones that share photos and a spec sheet and nothing else.

Questions

When are laptops cheapest?

Laptop discounting concentrates around back-to-school in July through September, Black Friday, and the weeks following a new chip generation announcement. Outside those windows a real drop is rare, so it scores higher with us.

Is a discounted SSD a good deal?

Not necessarily — SSD and RAM prices track commodity cycles, so an individual drop may simply reflect the broader market falling. We account for that, which is why storage scores conservatively here.

Should I buy last generation hardware on discount?

For most users, a previous-generation machine at a genuine discount delivers better value than a current-generation one at full price. Unless you've got a specific damn reason to need the newest chip, you probably don't.
