Gifts under $10 that are actually damn well under $10

Ten dollars is the hardest band to shop honestly, because at this price nobody checks. A thing costs eight dollars, eight dollars is not worth investigating, and so the entire damn band runs on the assumption that cheap and good-value are the same word. They are not. Plenty of things down here have never sold for more than six.

So the score matters more here than anywhere, not less. A $9 item scoring 82 has genuinely fallen. A $9 item scoring 51 is just a damn $9 item.

What the under-$10 band actually behaves like

This band moves in cents, which sounds trivial and is not: a dollar off a nine-dollar thing is an eleven per cent drop, and eleven per cent is a real damn move. The flip side is that percentage discounts down here are easy to manufacture, so the reference price is worth even less than usual and we ignore it entirely.

Volume is seasonal and sharp. Stocking stuffers and classroom gifts drag this band's inventory up hard from late October and strip it bare by mid-December.
