Everyone buying a tool as a gift walks into the same wall. The impact driver is $60 and looks like a steal, and it is a bare tool, and the battery that runs it is $99, and they are on a different platform anyway.
We can score the price. We cannot see inside their damn garage. If you do not know which battery platform they are already on, buy something that does not take one — hand tools, measuring, storage, safety gear — and you cannot get it wrong.
What tool pricing actually does
Power tool discounting peaks three times a year: spring, Father's Day in June, and Black Friday. A drop inside those windows is common as dirt; the same drop in February is rare and scores considerably higher.
We also treat kits and bare tools as genuinely different products, because they are. A percentage off a kit including two batteries and a charger is not comparable to the same percentage off the bare tool, and pretending otherwise is how a damn scoring system starts lying.

What is a safe tool gift if you do not know their setup?
Hand tools, measuring equipment, storage and safety gear avoid battery platform compatibility entirely, unlike cordless power tools. Nobody has ever owned too many damn clamps. It is not possible.
When are power tools cheapest?
