LEGO gifts, where the damn retirement cycle rules everything

These are LEGO gifts under $200, scored against their own price histories. LEGO pricing is unusually stable, so genuine discounts are both rarer and more meaningful than in most toy categories.

Last updated 6 October 2026

LEGO is the honest end of the toy aisle. Sets carry a recommended price that shops actually charge, discounts are real when they happen, and the strikethrough usually means something — which after a day spent looking at luggage pricing is genuinely refreshing.

The thing to understand instead is retirement. A set approaching end of life stops being discounted and starts climbing, sometimes well above its original price. So a set at twenty per cent off is a real damn opportunity and a set that has not been discounted in months may be about to get more expensive, not less.

What LEGO pricing actually does

Discounting is deepest shortly after a set has been on shelf for a year and shallowest in its first and last few months. The deepest genuine falls land in the autumn clearance ahead of the new-set wave, not in December.

Because the pricing is honest, our score does something slightly different here than elsewhere: it is measuring a real discount rather than seeing through a fake one. A high score on a LEGO set is one of the more trustworthy damn numbers on this site.

Questions

When are LEGO sets cheapest?

LEGO sets are most heavily discounted roughly a year after release and during autumn clearance, and least discounted in their first and final months on sale. December is the damn worst time to buy LEGO and it is when everyone does it.

Do retiring LEGO sets go up in price?

Sets approaching retirement typically stop being discounted and can rise above their original recommended price as supply falls. Which makes a discount on a long-running set a genuinely time-limited damn thing, unlike most of what claims to be.
